Typography is the visual component of a written word. Typography is important because it helps to clearly express the feeling of a word, and therefore, it grabs people's attention. The quote - "Each font has a personality and a purpose” is trying to tell us that every font portrays a different personality which purpose is to match the personality with the word. Five of the basic types of fonts include Serif, Sans Serif, Monospaced, Script/Handwriting, and Novelty. A Serif font has "feet", and are typically used for large blocks of texts or prints because it is easier to read then most fonts. The Sans Serif font does not have "feet", they are perfect for writing headlines, titles, and smaller chunks of text. They are mostly used on the web. In Monospaced fonts, each letter takes up the same amount of space. They aren't good for large blocks of text, and are mostly used in coding. The next type of font is called Script/Handwriting. It looks like cursive, calligraphy, or someone's handwriting. Since it is difficult to read, it's mainly used for logos, large headlines, and details. Lastly, Novelty fonts look like fonts that had a design drawn into them. They are good attention getters because of their unique look, but their popularity comes and goes. Therefore, many people learn to use this font more sparingly. Typeface comparisonFor my Typeface Comparison project, I had to find one example of each typeface in an A4 Gravit document. We were to give an example text for each of the fonts, give the fonts names, and label which type of font they were. Word PortraitsFor the Word Portraits assignment, we were to create an A4 sized Gravit document. Then, we had to choose ten fonts and write two words with each of them; one that matched with the personality of the font, and one that did not. Then, we had to label each font with the font names. While creating this assignment, we had to remember what we learned about Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity.
